As a big fan of Frank Herbert’s legendary Dune novels I was compelled to get a with that theme on my back. Naturally House Atreides was my favorite and I wanted to pay them homage. Although many believe the hawk-crest should be in blue due to the Dune games, Frank Herbert’s original intend was it to be red. The hawk’s eyes are saturated by the spice giving it it’s blue color and in the back we see a typical Dune landscape with two great makers or Shai’Hulud with static energy emerging from them. High above we have the two moons of Arrakis, the one with the prophet’s hand and ofcourse the one with the little desert-mouse called Muad’Dib. Fremen are also included on the front and the scene is completed with a quote of Duke Leto Atreides the first: “The Sleeper must awaken” which seemed crucial for not only House Atreides, Paul Atreides and his children, but for the entire human race throughout the saga.
This tattoo started of as an idea I got from a tattoo website which portraited the Atreides crest. At first I only wanted the crest with the litany against fear surrounding it, but as time passed the idea changed into the results you see here. Inking the lines costed about 4 hours and coloring, recoloring and finalising it took about 3 months in several sessions ranging from 1 hour to 4 hours. The artist who made this tattoo possible and actually designed the whole thing was Gillis of Gekko Tattoo’s in Terneuzen (http://www.gekkotattoos.nl/) Part of the coloring was done by him on the International Brussels Tattoo Convention 2012.
